This project was created with the idea of making a whole book about a single block of the city. It seemed really hard to not expand it, but it ended up being a successful mission.
I focused on a block at Polk Street, in San Francisco. That block is home for
Bob's Donuts, an ordinary but very lovely traditional donut shop.
“Fragments of a Block” treats the city as beautiful, but not precious. It works as a treasure box of everything I've found in the neighborhood. I wanted the readers to find the same grace and beauty in the things I've seen and the people I've met around there.
I tried to capture the texture of the streets in the most accurate and real possible way, therefore I collected objects and photographed them and also interviewed strangers around the neighborhood.
The process included also many digital photographs and a curating process to select the best ones.
The design concept for it is to be like an office labeled, treating the treasures of the neighborhood not so preciously. I used pink colored copy paper, blue pens and sticker tags.
I brought the textures of the streets to the book. The format is also similar to a notebook
size to make it feel like a field guide.
